SPAN & BIFF Present: SPAN Fundraiser – A Night at The Drive-In featuring Just Mercy
Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN) is a local human rights organization committed to ending violence against adults, youth and children in our community. In April, SPAN provided $13,000 of rental assistance to survivors of domestic violence that lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Additionally, over the last six weeks, SPAN’s legal advocacy team has received more calls than the previous four months in total. SPAN needs our community’s support now more than ever to continue its work for survivors and their children in the Boulder area.
Show your support of this great local organization and join us for a night at the drive-in! Fill up your car with family or close friends for a memorable evening socially-distanced style! There will be live music by Jenn Cleary, a few words from SPAN’s Executive Director and snacks! Featuring the newly released film, Just Mercy, proceeds will benefit SPAN and it’s important work in the Boulder community. What better way to support this essential resource than a night at the drive-in!?
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Rob Morgan, Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, and Brie Larson.
A powerful and thought-provoking true story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.
There will be live music before the film by Jenn Cleary who will be accompanied by Mad Dog Friedman on the harmonica! From songs that make you smile and groove, to soulful ballads that might just bring a tear to your eye, Colorado performing artist Jenn Cleary will impress you with her thoughtful songwriting and dynamic performance. She can be found rocking festival stages with her band: entertaining at the Colorado Rockies games; jammin’ it up with blues harp player Mad Dog Friedman; or playing solo at intimate house concerts. Jenn’s latest album is Blues Full of Heart; crowd favorites from Janis Joplin to Stephen Stills to John Prine.
